My name is Melissa and I currently live in east Tennessee. Before that I lived in the Atlanta, Ga area.
When hiking I go by the trail name “shoe”, which stands for slowest hiker on earth.
I gave myself my trail name in April 2008. I was on a section hike on the Appalachian Trail and was headed from Fontana Dam to Davenport Gap. The whole section of the Smokies. Anyways, I was climbing and climbing and then did a little more climbing up Shuckstack mountain. Everyone was passing me by. To be honest I was quite frustrated and remember thinking to myself that I was the slowest hiker on earth. Thus, a new trail name was born.
While I love hiking and backpacking it is sometimes a love/hate relationship. There are a lot of times that I really wonder why I am out there. But when I get to the top of the mountain I know why I am out there. There is really no other place I would rather be.
I am a hike leader with a women’s hiking group called the Traildames. It’s a great group of women and am honored to be a part of them. I only wish that I still loved close to them.
